Indie Comics. Indie?

Does the term "Indie comics" refer to the individual creating the works or the economics and machine behind the publishing. I assumed from discussions with fellow creators the indie universe was a path for creators to bypass gatekeepers who subjectively decides who gets to join their ranks; or at the least who they are willing to pat on the shoulder. The past few days found me willingly traveling down the rabbit hole of Indie comics, an informative trip but a tireless one. The gag is Indie comics was not coined for a creator seriously tired of the status quo and journeyed to create original works without a publishing house, but a niche created for the elite and the fallen gods who decided they can go further and accomplish more gains by eliminating a stifling bureaucracy governed by the ruling status quo.

There is hope. I think. I have read hundreds of drop dead fantastic comics from creators with no ties to a publishing house and no relations or friendships with established comic artists and writers in any degree. The aforementioned heroes are far and few. However, what can be the long needed solution to the problem of recycled storylines. Recycled storylines is a disgusting problem that has found its way in every entertainment medium possible. I have enough life knowledge to know large comic publishing houses are now Hollywood thanks to the massive success of Marvel and Netflix films. Overwhelmingly, select publishing houses, artists, and writers are not looking for an audience of readers that spectate, but spectators.

I do understand money. I considered myself an unlicensed creator who understands economics. If a publishing house or illustrator come knocking I am answering. I told you in the beginning it's a rabbit hole. But Seriously! What do you think? Comment below.
